Big Buddha Phuket: A Bike Trip Guide
If you are in Phuket and you have a bike, Big Buddha is a non-negotiable stop. The 45-meter white marble figure on Nakkerd Hill is visible from anywhere across the south of the island, and it takes about 30 minutes from Patong. Parking is free, entry is free too. But there are a couple of nuances that guidebooks skip.
What It Is and Why You Ride There
Big Buddha (Mingmongkol Buddha) is the main active temple complex in southern Phuket. The statue stands 45 meters tall, clad in thousands of Burmese white marble tiles. Each tile is a donation from a local family or a passing visitor.
Construction started in 2002 and is still formally ongoing β marble is added as donations come in. This is not a tourist attraction built for the photo op. It is a working Buddhist temple with monks, ceremonies, and pilgrims who actually come here to pray.
From the upper terrace you get a near-360Β° view: Chalong and Rawai right below, the Andaman Sea with its outer islands to the west, and on a clear day you can see Phuket Town. It is the highest tourist point on the island β and naturally the windiest.
The Ride
From Patong β head south on Route 4029, pass Kata and Karon, take the "Big Buddha" turn at the Rawai roundabout (signs are in Thai and English). The final 5 km is a steep paved switchback up Nakkerd Hill. On a 110β125cc scooter, drop into 1stβ2nd gear and don't rush. With a passenger, the steepest sections will push the engine to its limit β that's normal.
From Kata or Karon β shorter, ~10 km. From Phuket Town β 14 km through Chalong. Mornings (before 10 AM) are clear; afternoons bring tourist shuttles and rental cars. A bike still wins because passing on the switchback is much easier than crawling behind a minivan.
What You Need to Know On-site
Free, two lots β lower one at the souvenir shops, upper one right at the statue. Arrive before 11 AM in high season to get the upper lot.
6:00 AM β 7:30 PM. Best time is early morning (soft light, cool air) or one hour before sunset (golden hour, but crowded).
Shoulders and knees must be covered. Free sarongs are handed out at the entrance. A 50β100 ΰΈΏ donation is customary, not required.
Most places inside don't accept cards. Bring some Thai baht for water, coconuts, and souvenirs.
What's Nearby
10 minutes back down the hill β Karon Viewpoint with a panorama of three beaches (Karon, Kata, Nai Harn). Free, parking on-site.
5 km away β Wat Chalong, the main Buddhist temple of Phuket. Architecturally more interesting than the Buddha itself and usually less crowded.
If you have the full day β add Promthep Cape for sunset (15 min south of the Buddha). The classic loop: morning Buddha, afternoon Promthep, evening sunset and a late dinner in Phuket Old Town.
Recommended Bikes
Solo β a Honda Scoopy 110 or Click 125 handles it fine. Riding with a passenger or in a group β Honda Click 160, PCX 160 or NMAX 155 are better: extra torque on the switchback, comfortable two-up seating. Motorcycles like Rebel 500 or MT-15 work, but it's overkill β this trip rewards comfort, not power. Old 50β80cc scooters are not recommended β the final climb with a passenger can genuinely stall you.
